Since 1996, the Dauphin County Work Release Center has operated as a separate stand-alone facility that collaborates with Dauphin County Prison to provide opportunities to eligible incarcerated inmates to reside in a community corrections environment.  As a department of the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas, the staff of the work release center strives to prepare its residents with opportunities to begin employment and required treatment in advance of their release.

Residing in a less restrictive environment, work release residents are supervised on electronic monitoring to ensure their accountability when in the community.  Work Release residents fulfill fiscal obligations towards their placement in the work release program and the dockets for which they are serving.  Additionally, a significant number of community service hours are completed annually by the work release residents to support various non-profit organizations within the community.

Work Release residents buy and prepare their own food while those in need are provided with assistance from various social service providers in-house and within the community.

Work Release residents are primarily responsible for their own health care and are eligible for Medical Assistance if they do not have health insurance.  A correctional medical health care provider is on-site on a limited basis and serves as a daily liaison to the residents and their health care providers.

The staff of the work release center is dedicated to their mission:

The mission of the Dauphin County Work Release Center is to ensure the safety of the community by providing intensive supervision of incarcerated inmates and enforcing special conditions imposed by the Courts.

We strive to encourage accountability and reduce recidivism rates by supplying residents with access to social service agencies as well as community-based resources that offer educational, motivational, and job skills-based programs.

We believe that by giving residents the opportunity to maintain their employment, while paying their debt to society, they will come out of the experience as more responsible, viable members of our community.

Work Release Center Internship

Dauphin County Work Release Center internships, while unpaid, provide students with an opportunity to work in a criminal justice environment where Corrections blends with Probation.  The Work Release Center is a court managed department, separate from the Dauphin County Prison and Dauphin County Probation Services.  For over twenty years, the Work Release Center has offered programs and opportunities for professional development to assist employees and interns in the performance of their daily duties
